Redefining Democracy

Perhaps what has been most evident in the previous administration is that a Democracy can not be run like a business. Capitalism is not a formula for how to run a democratic republic. Capitalism is only a form of commerce. There is no equality in capitalism, that’s how capitalism is designed. There can’t be rich if there isn’t poor. Furthermore, a capitalist formula is not the best way to pick who is qualified for a position in our government. If we were to use a business formula for picking a politician then it would be improbable that we would hire someone more for their popularity and less for their ability, their credentials, and their educational background. A qualified person hired for a certain position in a business would understand how to follow the business model that the companies philosophy was based on. But perhaps there are some of these business formulas that we can use in the future to choose a candidate for office. I would suggest a Constitutional Amendment that would require all those who swear an oath to the Constitution prove that they have actually read the entire document. It’s one thing to swear an oath to the word “Constitution” and another to swear an Oath to the entire document. And the Constitution is not the only document our country is modeled after, there are three founding documents. Starting with the Declaration of independence. This document states the principles on which our government, and our identity as Americans, are based. It begins with:

 We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. 

  In this modern fast-paced world of technology in which we live, we seem to be overlooking these truths that our forefathers found to be self-evident. 

I propose that we use some of this new modern technology for all persons who are taking an oath to our founding documents can prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that they have read each one. They should be required to read word for word into a camera each document, then archive that record in the Library of Congress. This allows a review by all their constituents and proves that, in fact, they have read the total text of each document before swearing an oath to Preserve, Protect and Defend

 I believe that saturating our representatives with this information will have a positive trickle-down effect on the whole of society. Perhaps then we may be more motivated to rewrite a more updated version of the Constitution that is more inclusive to all the people who are purported to have been created equal

 The founding fathers, even after writing these words, still held slaves. Article 1 section 9 states: 

It will be a state’s right to import persons as they see fit and shall not be prohibited by the Congress prior to the Year One thousand eight hundred and eight but can be taxed per person for no more than 10 dollars. 

Additionally, the way the Constitution defines how taxes were to be appropriated also has a bit of a slant in its text showing that they didn’t truly believe that all men were created equal

Article 1 section 2 states:  Taxes appropriated shall be determined by adding to the whole number of free persons, including those bound to service for a term of years, and excluding Indians not taxed, three-fifths of all other Persons.  Three-fifths of all other persons seems a bit less than fully created equal. Our country was never supposed to be considered a perfect union. Instead, these are foundational documents written with room to evolve in order to form a more perfect union. Union meaning all of us together and together are to support certain unalienable Rights. The most important of these are

 Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.
